The appeal concluded with the following words:

I pray to God for peace and reason to prevail among you, but if there are going to be any unfortunate and violent events to happen, I will have no other option but to stand personally on the side of the people over which the force has been used.65

Soon after this appeal, Patriarch Pavle openly supported the student protests. He sent them the following message:

I am talking to the students of the University in Belgrade, who over a month long show their feelings of truth, justice, and the respect for the democratic expressed will of people, which was always a noble characteristic of the youth. It is good that you express your commitment to these great ideals in a peaceful and dignified way, which is not always the case for the youth. A difficult situation for our people after the civil war had been so great and affects all of us, has made your youth to ask on the meaning of life and the meaning of suffering. … Your attitudes, both human and evangelical, have been blessed and supported by the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Church prays to the God for his help, in the best interest of justice, salvation of people, its freedom and reputation, for you to know that you can always, now and in the future which is ahead of you, always rise above everything which is less important, which is inhuman.66
